A Volunteer's Story

Share

Here is a short case study from one of our volunteers...

Heritage is where my heart lies and when I was little I spent a lot of time at Lincoln Castle, and I have so many memories. During university, I heard of the volunteering opportunities at Lincoln Castle. I was excited and petrified all at the same time. I was a quite person and lacked experience and confidence outside of what I was used too. The team at Lincoln Castle were great; I was welcomed with open arms and fully supported in my new adventure.

I thought I knew what Lincoln Castle was about but I was in for a shock. It already reeked of history and so many stories, something that we continued to create. I was largely involved with visitor experience- one day I would be interpreting Magna Carta, the next teaching kids about heritage skills or even stewarding events like the open air cinema. Fast forward 3 years and the feeling of listening to a visitor tell you how great they think the place is, or the day that they have had never gets old.

If it wasn't for volunteering at Lincoln Castle I don't believe I would have ever become who I am today or have come out of my 'shell'. I was able to not only secure a job but also gain a second family. I have even learnt more things in my years here than I think I could ever have learnt anywhere else. I will always be in awe of the place and forever grateful.
