All Bound Up Medley of Medieval


A 3 days of hands on workshops focused on historic binding techniques!

Join us for 3 days of workshops which focus on the traditional hand book binding techniques. You'll build up your own mini libary of authentic early styled books.

You'll spend one day focusing on Limp Vellum binding. Durring this workshop you will use a vellum substitute to create traditional styled books with leather thongs, fold ins, and ribbons.  You'll learn how to sow a paper book block on leather thongs and ribbons, discover how to create a cover from vellum substitute to wrap around the text block and how to work threads of leather securing it together from the block through the cover.  

On another day you'll delve into Wooden and Coptic style binding techniques. You'll create stunning tactile wooden covered books with sewn paper sections on exposed spines in a variety of styles the basics of the medieval and early sewn books. The workshop is spent hands on with the materials and the sowning needle as you discover the coptic techniques that have been used for centruries

The final workshop in our medley of medieval bundle is Long Stitch. The tecnhique is named for the visability of ths stitches on the spine. As the day progresses you'll learn some of the basic elements of glue free bookbinding in addition to the particular elements that create the distinctive longstitch.

Tutor: Mags Bradley

Mags initally trained at Lincoln College of Art and went on to work within the conservation department of the National Archives. She created The Bindery 15 years ago and is kept busy with restoration and conservation of all styles and ages of books and book box’s. Her work ranges from repairing totally broken down volumes to those that just need a little TLC and a new back or label.
