Essential visit information

Booking a visit

If you would like to book a facilitated workshop, self-led visit, guided tour, or a combination visit, please contact a member of the Learning Team by email or telephone 01522 555904.

A member of the team will be happy to discuss your visit requirements and any queries you may have about your visit.

For school groups attending a facilitated workshop, the schools' entrance is located on the left side of the Georgian prison, near the East Gate of the castle.  All the Learning Centre rooms are fully accessible.  There are separate school toilet facilities, including disabled toilet, and coat and bag storage on the first and second floors.

The Victorian prison has a lift and stairs access to all floors.  Please note that some of the cells are not wheelchair accessible.  The David PJ Ross Magna Carta Vault has a lift and stairs.  The East Wall of the Medieval Wall Walk has a lift and is accessible to wheelchair users.  The other sections of the Medieval Wall Walk include steps.  There is an adapted audio tour for the East Wall only.

On arrival

You can enter the castle grounds via the East or West gates.  For school groups attending facilitated workshops, the schools' entrance is located on the left side of the Georgian Prison (the large red brick building in the centre of the grounds).  You will be greeted by a member of the Learning Team on arrival who will take the group leader to sign in.  The Learning Team staff will take the group up to the schools facilities, indroduce the team and inform everyone about their day.

Lunch rooms

If you book a facilitated workshop, your group will have access to a room in the Learning Centre to eat your packed lunches.  This will be pre-booked when you confirm your visit date and times.  If your group is on a self-led visit, you will also have access to a lunchroom on request subject to availability.  If you are visiting the grounds of the castle only, you can book a half hour lunch room slot for £30 no earlier than two weeks before your visit.  The bailey of the castle is a great place to eat picnics in good weather and is free to enter.

Castle shop

The castle shop is well stocked with a wide range of pocket money priced items.  If you choose to visit the shop with your group, please ensure you do so in small groups at a time.  If you feel you may not have time to visit the shop with your pupils on the day, we offer a Goody Bag service.  The bags are booked and paid for in advance to be collected on the day of your visit.  Please contact for further information.
