Manuscript Illumination

Illuminated Manuscripts are hand written text, normally books, which have been decorated with gold and silver. Often there would also be colourful illustrations around the area being embellished with gold. These manuscripts are stunning surviving examples of medieval artwork, which would have been created using a variety of techniques. Some of which our Illuminated Manuscripts workshops begin to engage people (including those without drawing skills) with, deepening appreciation of this traditional skill, which can be used to reproduce classic medieval images or create some stunning contemporary designs. There are now so few people with the particular skills in the techniques required to produce illuminated manuscripts at the professional level that this traditional craft sits on the Red List of Endangered Crafts*.

We are privilaged to work with local artist and illuminator Toni Watts to occassionally run workshops in this traditional skill. Toni is one of the few remaining professional illuminators in the UK. She is also one of a handful of people who teach this traditional skill, running workshops and lecturing both at home and abroad. In addition she is also an illuminator at Lincoln Cathedral.
