A Volunteer's Story

I began as a volunteer when Lincoln Castle Revealed opened in April this year.  At the time I wasn’t purposely looking for a volunteering post, but when the opportunity arose I thought it was something I would really enjoy.

I was born in Lincolnshire and have lived here all my life and I’m very proud of our county's heritage.

The volunteer team makes a significant contribution to the visitor experience. We work alongside the castle staff and expert guides and our goal is to ensure all our visitors receive a warm welcome and have a memorable visit.

In the short time I have been at the castle I’ve gained a lot of knowledge on all sorts of subjects relating to our unique environment.  The jobs we cover are varied. Sometimes tasks can be a challenge, because it’s something I’ve never experienced before, but it makes it more interesting for me. I work inside and outdoors and I especially enjoy the special weekend events.

The hours and days I choose to volunteer are flexible, which is ideal, as I can plan it around family and work commitments. I enjoy engaging with visitors and meet people of all ages from the UK and abroad.  It’s rewarding to see how my contribution makes a difference and it’s a privilege to be part of their day.

I’m looking forward to the experiences and challenges the rest of the year will bring. If you were to ask me what attributes a potential volunteer needs I would say that everyone has strengths they can bring to our team, but two of the most important attributes are that it helps if you enjoy meeting and helping people, and a good sense of humour is essential.
