William Marwood: Cobbler, Chaplain and Executioner
William Marwood was a Victorian who lived & worked around Horncastle in Lincolnshire. He had an interest in execution and developed the technique for carrying out hangings in a method known as the 'long drop' – a method used to minimise the time taken for the executed criminal to pass away.
Marwood had a strong association with Lincoln Prison, within the Castle walls, where he carried out his first execution and went on to become the British state executioner, hanging almost 200 people in an 11-year period.
